The Orthopedic Clinic and the Rehabilitation Clinic of the University of Patras have organized a holistic clinic for the management of vulnerability and its complications.
What is third-age vulnerability?
It is a syndrome that appears with advancing age and is characterized by a decrease in:
- Muscle mass and strength
- Bone mass and bone density (osteoporosis)
- Walking speed and body weight
It has symptoms such as:
- Unexplained loss of appetite and difficulty in performing daily activities
- Gradual withdrawal from activities and social isolation
- Reduced mobility and an increased risk of falls, fractures, and traumatic brain injury
As a result, it leads to:
- Increased morbidity
- Challenging medical intervention
- Poor response to treatment
- Ultimately, increased mortality.”
What do we recommend?
The interested individual should undergo:
A. Evaluation and Diagnosis
- by a team of specialists to create a detailed assessment of their functional level and health needs.
- using specific tests, radiological and laboratory examinations, the diagnostic process is completed, and the patient is informed about the course of their health.
B. Intervention
- Referral to specialized medical clinics for further evaluation if needed.
- Organization of specialized exercise programs to counteract vulnerability, prevent falls, and promote overall well-being.
- Distribution of a brochure reminding the patient of home hazards and what they can do to address them.
- In some cases, home visits for an assessment and study of changes in the living space.
