Identity

The Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Patients with Spinal Cord Injuries is an independent University Clinic, officially established in 2010 (Government Gazette 1091, 19.7.2010) within the Department of Medicine of the School of Health Sciences at the University of Patras. Its mission is to serve educational, research, and nursing needs in the field of the Rehabilitation of Patients with Spinal Cord Injuries.

The creation and continuous development of a specialized Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Patients with Spinal Cord Injuries, with accessibility for everyone.

Providing services that assist individuals experiencing or likely to experience disabilities in achieving and maintaining optimal functioning in interaction with their environment.

The funding and construction of the project, with a budget of €3,000,000, were entirely undertaken by the renowned naval engineer Mr. Dimitrios Sfikas with the support of his spouse, Mrs. Vera Sfikas, President of the German School in Athens. It was delivered to the state fully operational in 2011, meeting the strictest specifications and standards of the universities of Munich and Hamburg.

Clinic’s Purpose

According to the declaration of the United Nations and the World Health Organization, the possibility of access to Rehabilitation services is a fundamental human right. The biopsychosocial model for addressing disability defines Rehabilitation as “a set of measures that help individuals experiencing or likely to experience disabilities to achieve and maintain optimal functioning in interaction with their environment.” (World Health Organization Report on Disability, 2011)

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is an independent medical specialty focused on improving physical and cognitive functionality, activities (including behavior), participation (including quality of life), and modifying personal and environmental factors. Rehabilitation is: The use of all means to reduce the impact of conditions that lead to disabilities and impairments and to enable individuals with disabilities to achieve satisfactory social reintegration. (Definitions of rehabilitation by WHO)
